Definition of Position:
Responsible for rendering professional care to patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy procedure within the Center, in accordance with established procedures. Functions cooperatively with physicians and staff exhibiting teamwork characteristics.  


  1. High school graduate with one or more years experience with gastrointestinal endoscopy
  2. Able to read, write, and communicate
  3. Displays a primary interest in giving food patient care and maintaining standards of courtesy and friendliness to co-workers
  4. Membership in gastrointestinal specialty society encouraged
  5. Maintains BLS certification
  6. Able to comply with patient confidentiality and integrity policy on all matters
  1. Assists in preparing patient for endoscopy procedure
  2. Accurately obtains vital signs as indicated and documents on chart
  3. Cleans equipment used per policy
  4. Observes universal precautions
  5. Handles patient specimens per procedure
  6. Reports patient condition to Procedure Room/Recovery Room nurse
  7. Refers situations beyond ability to function to proper person
  8. Participates in Quality Assurance/Safety program
  9. Assets with maintaining adequate inventory of supplies
  10. Assists with housekeeping responsibilities as directed by Recovery Room/Procedure Room nurse
  11. Informs nurse in charge when leaving for break, lunch or leaving for day
  12. Explains procedures to patients and places patients at ease and offers reassurance as needed
  13. Prepares specimen containers and maintains an adequate supply
  14. Performs other tasks and duties as directed by Nurse Manager or physician within their legal limits
  15. Seeks educational opportunities and accepts responsibilities for own professional growth and development. Participates with inservice opportunities and staff meetings
  16. Must maintain patient right to privacy by not discussing privileged information outside the work area or within hearing range of visitors, family or patient
  17. Keeps examining and consultation rooms clean, neat and stocked
  18. Assists with maintaining inventory of supplies and orders supplies under direction of nurses
  19. Cleans rooms after each patient and leaves ready for the next patient
  20. Prepares patients as requested by the physician according to the type of exam
  21. Accurately completes laboratory slips and culture/path slips as requested by physician
  22. Assists with answering the phone
  23. Knowledgeable of potential exposure to hazardous materials (i.e. patient body fluids, disinfectant chemicals)
  24. Assembles patient charts correctly and fills in information with their scope of understanding
  25. Files completed medical records and pathology slips
