RN – Registered Nurse


The RN in the Endoscopy Suite is responsible for planning, organizing, and overseeing the efficient operation of the GI Suite, including technical and managerial leadership. The RN is responsible for the complete management of the patient's endoscopy experience.

Education, Training, Experience:

  1. Currently licensed to practice nursing i n the state.
  2. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  3. BS in nursing required.
  4. Certification in CPR.
  5. A minimum of two years experience as an Endoscopy Nurse .
  6. Completion of a critical care class including basic arrhythmia interpretation, and/or ACLS certified.
Job Relationships: Reports to Medical Director. Responsibilities:
  1. Reviews chart for contents and completeness regarding allergies, medication Hx, operative consent, pre-op Dx,\\ v/s, height/weight, presence of any necessary pre-op testing and any other pertinent data.
  2. Completes nursing assessment upon admission, identifying/documenting patient problems.
  3. Greets and identifies patients pre-procedure to name, physician, procedure, NPO (if applicable) and any allergies.
  4. Communicates with pre-op nurses and physicians office staff whenever necessary to effectively plan patient's care.
  5. Demonstrates awareness of patients fears and apprehensions and reassures patient with a calm, quiet environment whenever possible.
  6. Assures that all needed supplies, medications and equipment is available, tested and ready for the procedure.
  7. Assist in safely positioning pt. for procedures, maintaining proper body alignment.
  8. Monitors all activities in the Endoscopy Suite for safety of the patient and personnel.
  9. Responsible for complete and accurate documentation on procedure record.
  10. Keep Medical Director informed of any unusual occurrences arising.
  11. Assist in safe transfer of patient.
  12. Coordinates with ancillary services.
  13. Accepts, labels, documents and logs All specimens.
  14. Effectively communicates with personnel receiving the patient post-procedure, including but not limited to: pt's name, procedure performed, allergies, physical or mental limitations, special needs, post-op orders and other pertinent information pertinent do the patient's endoscopy experience.
  15. Ensures that all pre-procedure instructions were followed. Informs physician of any deviations.
  16. Assists in trouble-shooting, repair and calibration of various equipment.
  17. Directs Endoscopy Tech on a day.0 day basis for management of a safe, cost effective Endoscopy Suite.
  18. Assists in restocking and ordering supplies for GI area.
  19. Assists in preparing room for each booked procedure.
  20. Keeps room organized and clean.
  21. Checks equipment for readiness.
  22. Assists in maintaining equipment.
  23. Assists in updating policy/procedure manuals. Knowledgeable of the policies/procedures, philosophies, goals and objectives of the surgery center.
  24. Performs any other duty assigned by the Medical Director for smooth operation of the facility.
  25. Coordinates with physicians offices and books GI procedures.
  26. Utilizes interpersonal skills to promote and maintain communication. a. Serves as a role model for peers. b. Function as a team member. c. Maintain good relationship and communicate well with patients, families, staff and physicians in a professional manner. d. Follows chain of command regarding intra-or interdepartmental problems. e. Shares knowledge with co-workers through open communication and continuous upgrading of skills. f. Maintains a patient-focused attitude.
  27. Demonstrates dependability and accountability. a. Reports to work as scheduled or call one of the management staff i n a timely fashion if unable to report to work. b. Maintain a professional appearance through proper attire. c. Complete all the tasks listed i n this job description i n a timely and professional fashion. d. Perform other duties as assigned by members of the management staff.
  28. Continuing Education: a. Demonstrates interest i n self-improvement, b. Takes responsibility for learning new procedures, operating new equipment and utilizing new products. c. Takes advantage of learning experiences offered in or by the center. d. Attends and participates in all in-service programs. e. Maintains valid CPR card. f. Obtains necessary continuing education credits. g. Stays current with AORN standards/practices.
